Better Lighting for Safe Movement
Good lighting does more than help you see—it helps you move around your home with greater comfort and confidence.
As we get older, our eyes naturally need more light than they once did. Areas that used to seem perfectly bright can gradually become harder to see, especially hallways, stairways, bathrooms, garages, and entryways. Because the change happens slowly, many people don't even notice they've been adapting to dimmer lighting.
Fortunately, improving the lighting in your home is often one of the easiest changes you can make.
A brighter light bulb, a new lamp in a favorite reading chair, under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen, or motion-activated lights that turn on automatically at night can make everyday life feel much easier. Good lighting also makes it easier to read labels, prepare meals, enjoy hobbies, and welcome visitors into your home.
Take a look around your home and ask yourself:
Are there places that seem a little darker than they used to?
Do I ever avoid going into a room because it isn't well lit?
Is it easy to see when I get up during the night?
Would brighter lighting make reading, cooking, or other everyday activities more enjoyable?
Are light switches easy to reach when I enter a room?
Sometimes a simple lighting change can make a room feel completely different.
If you've ever wished a room were just a little brighter or easier to move through, we'd be happy to help you explore some simple ideas. Often the solution is easier—and more affordable—than people expect.

Our mission is to help older adults live the best, fullest lives they can—and we know some of the best ideas come from people just like you.
Maybe you've discovered a simple way to make everyday life easier. Maybe you've found something that brought new purpose or enjoyment into someone's life. Or perhaps there's a question or topic you'd like us to explore.
Send it our way.
Your idea might inspire something we explore here at Homeguard—and it might even help another older adult discover a possibility they hadn't considered before.
Because sometimes the best ideas begin with one person simply saying, “Have you ever thought about this?”
